If you’re looking to improve the energy efficiency of the windows in your range, investing in Passivhaus standard windows could be a good decision to make for your business.

What is Passivhaus?

Manufacturing and supplying windows that have U values below 0.8, Astraseal having been leading the field in Passivhaus standard windows for a number of years.

Passivhaus is a energy efficient building standard developed by Professors Bo Adamson of Sweden and Wolfgang Feist of Germany, in Germany in the early 1990s. It aims to dramatically reduce the requirement for indoor space heating and cooling whilst maximising comfort and air quality levels. In effect, the Passivhaus standard aims to significantly reduce energy consumption and emissions by improving the standard of insulation in a home.

A more formal definition describes the Passivhaus as “… a building, for which thermal comfort can be achieved solely by post-heating or post-cooling of the fresh air mass, which is required to achieve sufficient indoor air quality conditions – without the need for additional recirculation of air.”

The Passivhaus standard has been widely adopted on the continent, particularly in countries such as Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden where the energy efficiency market is booming. That said, Passivehaus can be used in any climate and is used widely across the world in countries like China and Australia. The market is beginning to take hold here in the UK.

Astraseal: leading the Passivhaus charge

When it comes to championing Passivhaus in the UK, Astraseal have been at the forefront of the charge. One of our first projects involved manufacturing, supplying and installing windows for the BASF Research House Full Passivhaus scheme in Nottingham. Since then, we’ve gone on to supply a range of Passivhaus standard windows for various commercial and domestic projects.

Commissioned by BASF, one of the largest suppliers of raw materials to the construction industry for insulation materials, and Nottingham University, the BASF Research House project involved us helping to create an energy efficient home to the full Passivhaus standard.

The project required the home to achieve as close to zero carbon dioxide emissions as possible, utilise an affordable and simple design and address the shortage in skilled labour.

Nearly 100% of the south facing façade and 23% of the whole north façade were glazed areas in the form of windows. This called for windows that could provide exceptional levels of thermal retention. Astraseal was commissioned to provide the structural glazing and windows for the home thanks to our reputation for energy efficiency products and expertise. The windows that we provided had U values as low as 0.8W/m2 making them perfect for improving the energy efficiency of a home.
